Hunting with E cats.

I put everything on my E application, Service rifle comps, hunting, target shooting, collecting, practice for comps, anything I could think of went on there and I had no problem at all. Approval took about 2 weeks. Just be honest and dont word it like a legal document.
It does help ALOT if your a member of a club or three and are an active member of those clubs.

Whats the story with listing your currently owned rifles with serial numbers on the E cat form? Do you fill it out or do you not? or do you fill it out WITHOUT adding serial numbers so the AO can grill you on why you havn't etc...
Sometimes what is "right" isn't as important as what is "profitable"........ sad but true

I left that section blank, even though I'd mentioned I owned another A cat rifle in a letter I wrote to go along with the application. I wasn't asked anything about why I'd left the section blank, although this was about 18 months ago, so things may have changed since then.

I applied for and received my "E" late last year under the freebie deal, as I have firearms that are considered MSSA's under the new interpretation.

I listed all of my guns, and simply wrote "A-cat" in place of the serial number. I also have to say that I found the whole process quite painless, and my local arms officer to be very professional and helpful. I listed pest control and recreational shooting with my current firearms as my main reasons for the endorsement application. I don't belong to any clubs, don't reload ammunition, and I don't subscribe to any shooting magazines.

The arms officer didn't pass personal judgment on my reasons for applying. Instead he spoke with me as a fellow law abiding citizen about a variety of issues, and then did a very thorough job of confirming my "fit & proper" status by interviewing my references in considerable depth about me.

I am sometimes a but dubious of police/government process, but he raised my opinion of the NZ police quite a lot. I was dealt with professionally, in accordance with the law, and without any cloud of institutional or personal bias.

Back when I lived in Christchurch, I once telephoned the central arms office about a suspicious firearms related matter I'd become aware of by chance when making a purchase through TradeMe. I was initially treated with indifference and suspicion, only to be called back a week later and questioned in a rather accusative manner. After this experience I would have thought twice before contacting them if I had ever come across similar information again.

In contrast, I would not hesitate even for a second to call and speak with the arms officer who dealt with my "E" application, as I know I would be treated in a friendly manner, with respect, and probably even a measure of gratitude if the information was useful. I also feel I owe him the same respect - he treats me fairly, so in return, if I become aware of a situation or information that he would want to know about in his professional capacity - I should call him.

If I was to ever have the opportunity to speak with Mr Joe Green, I would like to suggest to him that an approachable Arms Officers is far more effective at finding and regulating illegal firearm activity, than one who alienates the shooters in the area that he/she oversees.

Quite right. You would think the Police would realise that and choose their people with that in mind, but I suppose that is to much to ask.

Those Ozzie imports sure do get around. Heard that there were some smaller variety's up north. Down here they like to hide amongst the tussock.

Sure is great sport shooting them while they're running. Nuggety little critters.

Hi guys just wondering why some of you say that you arnt allowed to use your E cats for hunting and some of you are? I just recieved my E cat and got the card last week. There was no mention what and where i could use it for... so i assume i could use it for hunting if i wanted to? Any ideas..

Cheers

it depends on what you wrote down on the application under "what you need one for" most of us will fill this in with everything we can think of (eg. sports shooting, service rifle, target shooting, hunting, animal control, pest destruction etc.) where some can get caught out is where they filled it out with "target and service rifle shooting." as long as you put down some mention of animal control or hunting in the application your good to go. :)

Cool, Yea i did. Put down goat culling, service rifle shooting etc etc so thats good. Just need to find some contacts around the Auckland area so i can get out for a bit of shooting. So annoying that you normally have a long long drive before you can get anywhere to go for a shoot.
